The following organizations were funded by the RAITH Foundation in 2010 and 2011.

Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS)
CALS was founded in 1978 and has been a pioneer in the development of a human rights framework for South Africa. RAITH provided funding for CALS to act for a coalition of organisations concerned with the development and challenging the mining rights granted to the Vele Colliery Project near the Mapungubwe Culture Landscape.

Hivos -SA
Established as a Section 21 Company in 2006, Hivos-SA is part of Hivos the Dutch development aid organization, which aims to contribute towards a free, just and sustainable world. RAITH supports their mulit-agency Defense of Democracy Fund which focuses on new or existing programmes, projects or campaigns that broadly aim to promote and defend democracy, the Constitution (and the Bill of Rights in particular), freedom of expression and human rights.

Wits Justice Project (WJP)
The Wits Justice Project was set up as part of Wits Journalism in 2007 to work with students and interns to investigate and expose the cases of individuals who were wrongly imprisoned in an effort to bring reform to the system, and to encourage human rights journalism. RAITH funding supports the WJP’s “Un-sentenced Prisoners” campaign.

Legal Resources Centre (LRC)
The LRC is an independent, non-profit public interest law clinic that works for the development of a democratic society based on the principles of substantive equality. It provides free legal services to the vulnerable, poor, homeless and landless of South Africa. RAITH supports the LRCs work with undocumented women and children, sex workers, street children and asylum seekers.

Social Justice Coalition (SJC)
Based in Khayelitsha the SJC is a membership based advocacy and lobbying organisation whose aim is to build a massed based community movement advocating and educating around the constitutional right to safety and security for all. RAITH supports their Safe, Clean and Accessible Toilet Campaign.
Pro-Bono
ProBono.Org is a non-profit organisation established in October 2006 with the aim of assisting poor, marginalised and vulnerable South Africans, through the use of the pro bono services of attorneys and advocates. The primary purpose of the RAITH-funded project is to change the way that maintenance is dealt with by the courts through the establishment of help desks at four maintenance courts in Greater Johannesburg.
Ikhwezi
Based in Cathcart. Ikhwezi fights injustice and discrimination against women, particularly in the areas of gender-based violence and HIV/AIDS. They provide human rights education, build capacity of women’s groups and monitor delivery of state services. RAITH provides funding to their Women’s Support Centre.

Ndifuna Ukwazi (formerly Centre for Law and Social Justice)
Ndifuna Ukwazi is a new organisation and was funded by the RAITH Foundation for its start up costs. NU is being set up to institutionalise activist leadership development, provide strategic support for social justice and human rights organisations, support coordinated political responses to initiatives such as the attacks on the press and conduct applied research.

FXI
FXI was established in 1994 to protect and foster the right to freedom of expression and to oppose censorship. Its vision is a society where everyone enjoys freedom of expression and the right to access and disseminate information. RAITH has provided core funding for its four major focus areas: Lobbying & Advocacy, Legal Advice & Litigation, Monitoring and Research Mainstreaming, Governance and Accountability Programme.

South African Civil Society Information Service (SACSIS)
SACSIS is a non-profit news agency that produces high quality articles about South Africa’s socio-economic policy debates from a social justice and civil society perspective. RAITH funding has allowed SACSIS to expand its reach in mainstream and online media by providing operational support.

Community Media Trust (CMT) and Equal Education (EE)
CMT is a not-for-profit media production company which produces educational television in the fields of HIV/AIDS, education, gender based violence and human rights generally. EE is a movement of students, parents and teachers working for quality and equality in education through analysis and activism. The two organizations have pooled their respective strengths to develop a show called ‘Funda’ which is partly supported by RAITH funding. ‘Funda’ aims to rekindle a passion for education and knowledge, make lasting change to and entrench pride in the education systems and restore belief in education as a vehicle for personal and social progress.

Corruption Watch
Corruption Watch is in the early stages of formation as an NGO that aims to contribute to the fight against increasing evidence of corruption in South African public life. RAITH funding provides support for the planning phase, preceding the proposed launch in December 2011.

The South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR)
The South African Institute of Race Relations was founded in 1929. RAITH’s once off funding was directed at SAIRR’s intervention as amicus curiae in the application brought by Terry Crawford-Browne against the President and Government of South Africa for an order directing the appointment of an independent judicial commission of inquiry into the arms deal.

The Social Change Assistance Trust (SCAT)
SCAT is an award winning human rights organization which has been in existence for 25 years. The organisation works to strengthen community based organizations, mostly advice offices. As part of this project, the organisation will train selected community members from CSOs on rights education and the monitoring of local service delivery. These monitors will then go back to their communities and observe service delivery processes, interview relevant officials and community members and compile reports. These reports will inform SCAT’s lobbying and advocacy agenda.

Afesis Corplan
Afesis was established in 1985 as a community advice office. It amalgamated with Corplan, a housing development NGO, in 1992 and became Afesis Corplan. The main purpose of Afesis-Corplan is to provide technical support, assistance and resources for development, education and upliftment aimed at creating sustainable settlements and promoting democratic local governance in poor and vulnerable communities. This project will conduct good governance surveys in targeted municipalities, train, mentor and give technical support to 92 ward committees and 80 members of civil society action groups to facilitate dialogue on issues of governance and development across 4 local municipalities.

Mail and Guardian Centre for Investigative Journalism (MGCIJ)
amaBhungane
MGCIJ is a non-profit initiative of the M&G newspaper and aims to enhance capacity for investigative journalism in the public interest. MGCIJ, whose investigators are nicknamed amaBhungane (the Dung Beetles in isiZulu), publishes through the Mail & Guardian, Mail & Guardian Online and its own website, www.amabhungane.co.za. MGCIJ produces major investigative stories in the public interest, imparts investigative skills to working journalists through an internship programme and engages in advocacy to defend and expand the democratic space investigative journalists need to do their work in service of the wider media community and the public. The Foundation is supporting the MGCIJ advocacy programme.

Parliamentary Monitoring Group (PMG)
The PMG was set up in 1995 by the Black Sash, the Human Rights Committee and IDASA as a project to monitor the work of over 40 Parliamentary Committees. It became an independent organisation in 2009 and aims to promote participatory democracy, transparency and accountability. RAITH has supported the committee monitoring and marketing of its services to a wider audience.

CHEEA (Centre for Heath and Environmental Awareness)
Based in South Durban, CHEEA strengthens the capacity of communities to be environmental activists, campaigns to pressurize big polluters to implement pollution control measures and exposes big polluters in media and through lobbying campaigns. RAITH has provided support to CHEEA’s education work and dialogues between communities and the “Big 5” polluters in the area.

Inyathelo (The South African Institute for Advancement)
Inyathelo provides resources and training aimed at growing capacity within organizations to build relationships with external stakeholders in order to attract resources and social investment. This particular project will establish a non-profit clinic aimed at providing affordable, quality support to the non-profit sector, particularly those active in social justice work.
